Welcome...
to the Broader Horizons

Here you will find an online discourse, about each of us becoming become the Director of our life instead of the leading Actor in it.

Understanding who we are and knowing ourselves well, is a skill that is often assumed and taken for granted. Pause for a moment and ask yourself this question, “Does my life have a purpose?”
Well, of course it does! We are all someone’s ‘something’- but do you like your current purpose?
Is it your purpose - or someone elses?
You may be, someone’s daughter/son, mother/father, partner, worker, student, mentor, leaning post, friend, enemy, cousin, sister/brother. Do you like each of these roles? Some maybe ‘yes’ and others ‘no’.
So pause, think for a few moments - If you could take charge and change your life, what would you change?

Give your life a sense of purpose that you love
Be able to balance your commitments with your dreams
Learn not just how to set goals but actually achieve them
Be able to get your life organised
Become a good decision-maker,
Trust your own judgement and
Create a healthier self esteem

Begin to comprehend and define your sense of purpose
Develop your focus
Attain assertive techniques for saying “No”
Create achievable goals that are real
Learn how to organise your time
Improve your ability to manage through change.

BROADEN YOUR UNDERSTANDING OF THE WORLD

In the war on terrorism, the US government has detained over four
thousand foreign nationals, engaged in guilt by association and ethnic
profiling, and conducted secret searches and wiretaps without probable
cause of criminality.

These measures have been sold to the public on the grounds that they
affect only foreign nationals, not American citizens. In Enemy Aliens,
award-winning author, Georgetown law professor, and Nation legal affairs
correspondent David Cole argues that in balancing liberty and security we
have consistently relied on a double standard, imposing measures on
foreigners that would never be tolerated if they were applied more
broadly.

SUDAN
Sudan has been at war, off and on, since 1955. The war has been fought
between the Sudanese government and rebels in southern Sudan. Since 1983
the war in the south has been largely conducted by the Sudan People's
Liberation Army (SPLA) led by John Garang. (1)

As with most conflicts, and particularly civil war, the Sudanese
conflagration has been beset with considerable propaganda and
disinformation. Several American organisations have clearly been caught
up, consciously or unconsciously, in this war.

BROADEN YOUR HORIZONS ON THE ENVIROMENT

REMOVAL OF FEDERAL MANATEE PROTECTION AREAS:
We, the Fish and Wildlife Service (Service), propose to withdraw two
areas in Florida from those designated as federally established manatee
protection areas. We are proposing this action under the Endangered
Species Act of 1973, as amended (ESA), and the Marine Mammal Protection
Act of 1972, as amended (MMPA). The areas we propose to withdraw from
designation are manatee refuges, in which watercraft operators are
required to operate at slow speeds throughout the year. Specifically,
the sites are the Pansy Bayou Manatee Refuge in Sarasota County and the
Cocoa Beach Manatee Refuge in Brevard County. Manatee protection would
not be diminished under this proposal because the sites will remain
protected under State law.

MASSASAUGAS RATTLESNAKE CONSERVATION DEA:
This notice advises the public and other agencies of the availability
of a draft Environmental Assessment (EA) and that the U.S. Fish and
Wildlife Service (Service) is seeking public comment on this draft EA.
The eastern massasauga (Sistrurus catenatus catenatus, hereafter
massasauga) is a Federal candidate species for listing under the
Endangered Species Act of 1973, as amended. The purpose of the EA is to
evaluate the environmental consequences of implementing different
strategies for conserving the remaining massasauga populations in
Region 3. The Service believes that implementing adequate conservation
efforts during the candidate stage may be sufficient to preclude the
need to Federally list the subspecies.

FIRST CLONED WILD CARNIVORE: Scientists at the Audubon Center for
Research of Endangered Species have cloned an African wildcat the
"world's first cloned wild carnivore" says the New Orleans Times-
Picayune 10/12. The two-month old kitten, Ditteaux, is the "only the
fourth endangered species ever to be cloned" and is a carbon copy of
"Jazz" a "test-tube African wildcat whose embryo was frozen, thawed,
then implanted in a domestic cat." Critics of cloning endangered
species contend it "usually produces sickly or defective animals that
die early or suffer in the process, and that it overlooks one crucial
aspect to the preservation of endangered species: protecting and
enhancing their habitat."

HAWAIIAN FOREST BIRDS REVISED DRAFT RECOVERY PLAN
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (``we'') announce the availability
for public review and comment, the Draft Revised Recovery Plan for
Hawaiian Forest Birds. There are 21 bird taxa included in this plan, 19
are listed as endangered, 1 is a candidate species for Federal listing,
and 1 is a species of concern. These taxa are from four bird families,
with the majority being Hawaiian Honeycreepers (subfamily Drepanidinae
within Fringillidae). This is a new recovery plan for two of the listed
birds.

AT1 ORCA GROUP PROPOSED MMPA DEPLETED STATUS:
NMFS proposes to designate the AT1 group of transient killer whales as
a depleted stock of marine mammals pursuant to the MMPA. This action is
being taken pursuant to a status review conducted by NMFS in response
to a petition to designate a group of transient killer whales in Alaska
(known as the AT1 group). The biological evidence indicates that the
group is a population stock as defined by the MMPA, and the stock is
depleted as defined by the MMPA.

GOOD SEX IS GOOD HEALTH

Sex survey: Indians play it safe!
Mumbai: Indians have sex on average once every four days, with most
preferring to make love at night on weekdays and during the day on weekends,
according to a survey published Monday by condom makers Kamasutra.

The survey, of more than 5,200 individuals -- 88 percent of whom were men --
from the cities of Mumbai, New Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, Ahmedabad,
Hyderabad, Bangalore, Pune, Lucknow and Chandigarh, revealed that most
Indians were satisfied with their current frequency of lovemaking.

"About 69 percent are satisfied with their current frequency. Their
favourite time to indulge in sexual activity is at night during weekdays,
but it shifts to daytime on weekends," the survey said.

The most popular position preferred was man on top, followed by woman on
top, while oral sex is becoming increasing popular with nearly
three-quarters of males having engaged in it.

"The sample seems to be very open in their attitude towards oral sex. More
than 70 percent of the respondents believe that oral sex is normal, whereas
more than 10 percent feel that it is dirty and a very few feel that it is
harmful for health," the survey said.

The Indian man is also not behind when it comes to fantasy, as most
fantasise about sex in different places -- and then with friends and
relatives.

"Watching others having sex is the other significant fantasy. A quarter of
the respondents fantasise about having sex with film stars or other famous
people, while about 15 percent would like to tie the partner and tease him
or her," the survey said.

It said kissing has also emerged as the most common form of foreplay, with
most Indians believing foreplay prepares both partners for satisfying sexual
encounters and is an essential part of lovemaking.

The overall awareness for safe sex is also very high in cities, with 79
percent of respondents -- especially singles -- saying they found using
condoms safe and convenient.

Nearly 80 percent of respondents believed that sexual integrity is important
for marriage, while 84 percent of the currently sexually active respondents
claimed to be loyal to their partners.

The survey revealed that 17 percent of respondents have felt sexually
attracted to person of the same sex and about half of them had indulged in
homosexual activities.

"Twenty percent of those who responded on homosexuality feel that it is
normal to be attracted to a person of same sex," it said.

The survey reveals that 53 percent of the sample claimed to have indulged in
premarital sex, while about half of those surveyed claimed to have had
sexual experiences before age 21 years.

"About 60 percent of these have indulged in premarital sex with more than
one individual, with boyfriend or girlfriend emerging as the number one
partner, while almost 39 percent of married respondents claimed to have had
sex with their spouses before marriage."

Nearly 80 percent of the respondents also felt that sex education should
begin in school by the age of 12.

MATURE AGE SEX

In a Modern Maturity article accompanying the survey, writer Susan Jacoby
notes, "The gap in attitudes between women over and under 60 suggests that
Baby Boomer women, the oldest of whom are in their late 40s and early 50s,
will be much less likely than their mothers' generation to accept celibacy
as the natural outcome of widowhood." Adds Shirley Zussman, Ed.D., a couples
therapist in New York City, "These women came of age believing they had a
right to sexual pleasure and that belief isn't going to evaporate at age 65
or 75."

Going against the popular "youth-oriented" culture, the number of people who
view their partners as romantic and/or physically attractive does not
decline with age; it may actually increase.
Six of every 10 men aged 45-59 gave their partners the highest possible
ratings for being "physically attractive," citing the phrase "strongly
applies." By age 75, 64 percent gave their partners this high rating. As for
women, 52 percent in their 40's and 50's gave their partners the highest
possible rating as "physically attractive," and 57 percent of those age 75
and over gave the same response.

The results were based on a mail survey of 1,384 adults aged 45 and older
which was completed during March 1999 by National Family Opinion Research,
Inc.
